21 dead in Mumbai bomb blasts

People react moments after a bomb exploded at Zaveri bazar in Mumbai, India, Wednesday.

MUMBAI, INDIA Three bomb blasts shook the city of Mumbai at the height of the evening rush hour on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people in what Indian officials called a co-ordinated terror attack on the country’s economic capital.

The explosions struck central locations in the city, including the crowded Dadar neighbourhood; the Zaveri Bazaar, a well-known jewellery market; and near the Opera House, according to India’s Home Ministry, which said 141 people had been injured.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper called the attacks “heinous acts of violence” and offered his sympathy to the victims.

“These attacks are a stark reminder that terrorism is alive and active around the globe and can strike at any time,” Harper said in a statement.

The attack was the first in Mumbai since militants from Pakistan mounted large-scale assaults on hotels, a train station and a Jewish community centre in November 2008, killing more than 160 people.

No immediate claim of responsibility for the Wednesday bombings was reported. India’s home minister, P. Chidambaram, said at a news conference in New Delhi that terror investigation teams had been dispatched to the blast sites.

Both Harper and Immigration and Citizenship Minister Jason Kenney visited India following the 2008 attacks.

“I can tell you having visited Mumbai shortly after, people were still deeply traumatized,” Kenney told reporters at a Calgary news conference.

“So to see this happen again indicates that the enemies of our democratic values will not relent and it reminds us that the fight against terrorism isn’t a passing thing. It’s a long-term fight and regrettably, the people of India are on the front lines.”

Kenney said he was not aware of any foreign nationals who were hurt or killed in the bombings. Canada will do anything it can to help India, but there have been no requests for assistance, he added.

The Opera House blast was the strongest of the three, said Prithviraj Chavan, the chief minister of Maharashtra state, though the precise severity of the blasts was not immediately clear. Indian news accounts described the bombs as improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Sidewalks in the Dadar neighbourhood were littered with shattered glass as crowds jostled to get into a nearby train station as a rain fell over the shaken city. Television images showed scenes of minor destruction.

Mumbai: Three explosions have taken place in Mumbai on Wednesday evening - two in South Mumbai at Opera House and in Zaveri Bazar and one at Dadar West, in central Mumbai. The Home Ministry has confirmed a terrorist attack and Mumbai is on high alert.

All blasts took place during rush hour and in crowded places.

Eyewitnesses said about 15 to 20 people have taken to hospital in Zaveri Bazar. Reports said six people had died in the Dadar blast, four in the Zaveri Bazaar blast. Government sources put the number of injured at 60.

One explosion,  in a car at a bus stop in Dadar West, has been confirmed. A police officer said there might have been an explosive in a meter box behind a hoarding at Khau gali, a street filled with eateries at Zaveri Bazaar. The Opera House blast took place at Prasad Chamber.

An unexploded bomb has also reportedly been found in Dadar and a bomb disposal squad is working to defuse it.

Early reports said a police control room had received a call claiming that there were serial blasts in Mumbai.

A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team has rushed to Mumbai from Delhi to investigate and collect forensic evidence. The police have appealed for calm.

Zaveri Bazaar has been hit before -  over 50 people were killed in twin blasts in 2002.
